Greetings from Vietnam
Written and designed by Ryan Maconochie, 1997
"What I did find in Vietnam was an alarming array of contrasts. Though Vietnam still considers itself a
Communist system, day to day business is carried out in the pioneering spirit of capitalism. Vietnam
may be one of the few countries on this planet without a McDonald's, but you can find Taco Bell-flavored
Doritos at the corner market. Saigon and Hanoi share the splendors of the great city of Paris while emitting
the simple pleasure of a backyard barbecue. And though Americans fiercely invaded Vietnamese shores
over thirty years ago, today I am as well received in Danang as Leonard Nimoy is at a Star Trek convention.
Vietnam is alarming, captivating, and above all else, charming. It is a country in transition; a country that is
trying to forget its tragic past and move on. It is doing a marvelous job."
