Excerpt from CS: “Ryan Maconochie puts the “art” in party. The graphic artist and creator of Star RM throws can’t-miss events to introduce his Book Band publications, was a founder of collective-party space Country Club Chicago (where he still hosts his bashes) and, in his spare time, creates kick-ass maps highlighting important points of interest- like the best spots for late night eats.”

Interview with Kate Templin follows:

CS: What’s your favorite night to go out and where are you going?
RM: I like going out straight after work on a Thursday or Friday and hopping around town from place to place. I usually start downtown and end up in Wicker Park.

CS: What’s your drink of choice?
RM: Valpolicella.

CS: How do you pre-game? (What the last thing you do before you go out?)
RM: Have a cocktail on my roof.

CS: Where do you go/What do you have for a pre-night-out meal?
RM: If I could eat dinner at Avec every night for the rest of my life, I would be a happy
man. I would order the foccacia, the chorizo stuffed dates, and whatever else the wait
staff recommends.

CS: Where do you go for a last minute party outfit?
RM: Toss up between Penelope’s on Division or Haberdash on Wells.

CS: Where do you go to pick up a last-minute date?
RM: MILF…seriously…it’s a mother’s group that my wife is a part of.

CS: Who do you call if you’re having a clothing crisis?
RM: The Fondude. AKA, Dan Jividen. He is wise on all things style.

CS: What’s your nightlife secret weapon (a fun friend/a perfect lipstick/an
especially intoxicating drink, etc.)?

RM: My custom made maps of continuous bar-hopping fun.

CS: What’s your fallback spot?
RM: Richard’s never fails.

CS: Who’s always the most fun?
RM: My wife is like Amy Poehler, Kristen Wigg and Elizabeth Hurley rolled into one.

CS: Who’s your go-to DJ? Promoter?
RM: Mr. Matt Rucins from Schuba’s is a knowledgeable man.

CS: What’s the song you’re listening to in the car on the way over?
RM: According to my I-Pod, I have listened to Stephen Malkmus? “Out of Reaches?” 31 times, and I just downloaded his new album two weeks ago.

CS: Most you’ve ever tipped?
RM: I try to go 20%. I would have given the guys at Schwa a million dollars if I could. They
were awesome.

CS: Have you ever slipped the doorman a 20 to bypass the list?
RM: I hate lists.

CS: What the worst nightlife faux-pas?
RM: Vomiting on another person. Not cool.

CS: What’s your favorite bygone bar or night? (specific time/place)
That super cool blue room that was downstairs at the original Harry’s Velvet Room on
Clark.

CS: Favorite evening accessory?
RM: A pen. I write down notes about stuff as ideas come to me.

CS: What’s your most regrettable outfit?
RM: Wearing pants that are too short and/or extra large t-shirts.

CS: What trend will you never go back to? What look will you never
resurrect?

RM: I never was a fan of cargo pants.

CS: Who’s your Chicago nightlife style icon?
MR: I worship the guys at Taco Burrito Palace on Halsted and Fullerton.

CS: What velvet rope would you never want to cross or cross again?
RM: I wish I could cross that rope that lets pilots go through security checkpoints at the
airport quicker. Does that count?

CS: Who’s your least favorite/favorite door guy?
RM: I don?t know any door guys.

CS: What’s your favorite non-alcoholic nightlife option?
RM: Biking along the lakefront.

CS: Where do you go to see the cutest guys/girls?
RM: The cutest girls work at Sprout on Chicago and Damen.

CS: What’s the best hidden makeout spot?
RM: The roof of Marina City.

CS: What’s your dealmaker (i.e. What would make you definitely want to talk
to someone)?

RM: Incredible originality. You can sense it from a mile away.
